Dental Cleanings

Cleanings are done to remove soft and hard deposits around the teeth. These deposits harbor bacteria and can contribute to decay and/or periodontal disease. Our recommended time for cleanings is every 6 months, however some people may be seen every 3 to 4 months  (due to various reasons), others are seen every 9 months. The frequency varies person to person, every care-plan is individualized.

Restorations

A restoration is needed when we detect decay starting within a tooth. Sometimes decay can be detected visually, but often a dental xray may be needed to determine the extent or exact location. When decay is small, you do not usually have any symptoms. People often think that if they have no pain, then they have no cavities, but often decay is silent and only once it has spread will it start to hurt. Often once you start to feel pain, it is possible that more aggressive treatment will be required. We also use restorations for fixing chipped teeth, or to build up a tooth to match another one next to it.

Root Canals

A root canal is a procedure where the nerve and blood supply to the tooth is removed, and the tooth is essentially considered “dead.” They can be needed for various reasons, most often it is because decay has progressed and bacteria has moved to the center of the tooth where the nerves and blood supply sit.

Extractions

This is the “pulling” of teeth. An extraction might be recommended for various reasons: teeth need to be pulled to create room for braces, the tooth no longer has any support from the bone and has become loose, a tooth is broken too badly and it can no longer be saved by other methods, etc.
